Following a science degree and a career in the pharmaceutical industry, it was through adult education that Hilary discovered ceramics and then later glass.
Hilary is fascinated with the properties of glass and the numerous techniques and processes to be explored and experimented with. She makes kiln-formed or leaded items and likes to combine pattern, texture and vibrant colours.
Although based in Kent, Hilary spends a number of weeks each year in Fife, Scotland and takes inspiration from the coastline, plant-life and landscape there.

Ten short years ago Pauline took a leap of faith and left her successful career in secondary teaching to dedicate time to her passion for design and creativity and to give her greater flexibility for her family. Studio Shards was born and Pauline hasn't looked back since! It has given her the opportunity to fulfil a lifetime’s ambition - to produce artwork she loves to make, and that people love to receive.
For as long as she can remember she has been driven to create, whether to paint, draw or sculpt. Her work is inspired by living close to the coast in West Sussex and spending a great deal of time in Cornwall. Walking - being immersed in the landscape in all weathers and looking at nature - is an essential part of her practice and is undoubtedly the foundation for Pauline's work.
Over many years she has developed her craft and although she studied art at college, she is completely self-taught. She is drawn to the fragility and diversity of working with glass, and loves the rich colours and the excitement of opening up the kiln to see what alchemy has occurred.
